Biomechanics and bioengineering

In October 2007 arc held its first Biomechanics and Bioengineering strategy meeting which brought together experts in this field.

The aim of the meeting was to identify key strategic research target areas, to identify and find solutions for current constraints in the research and to discuss how arc could assist in future research.

The agenda for the meeting can be viewed here. The major outcomes from the meeting are summarised below. A full report from the meeting can be viewed here.

Major Action Points

  • arc will foster academic interchanges between the different disciplines and could support more focussed networking meetings to move research forward in specific areas
  • arc will set up a working party to develop proposals for a national tissue bank to study the cellular and tissue responses to mechanical loading
  • arc could faciitate the sharing of Transgenic mice
  • arc will encourage applications for studentship and fellowship schemes, from individuals wishing to pursue a research career in these areas
  • arc’s newly developing clinical trials initiative will encourage studies of both experimental interventions as well as more traditional trials
  • arc will seek stronger relationships with the devices and prosthetics industry to move the research agenda forwards

Relevant research areas for further investigation

  • Normal physiology
  • Pathology
  • Interventions: materials
  • Interventions: surgical issues
  • Rehabilitation

arc Centre of excellence in biomechanics and bioengineering

Following the meeting and as an approach to enhancing its support of research priorities outlined above, arc announced a call for a Collaborative Centre of Excellence in Biomechanics and Bioengineering Research. Further details on the new centre will appear on the research website when available.
