Policies for achieving goals

Making strategy decisions: The Research and Academic Capacity (RECAP) Committee

arc has a strategic committee, the Research and Academic Capacity (RECAP) Committee, which has representation from all relevant disciplines and broad professional groups.

RECAP’s role is to identify needs and devise strategies to satisfy those needs and thus has the following remit:

  • To monitor the ongoing UK strength in terms of recruitment and retention to all necessary positions of relevance to the research and educational goals of arc
  • To devise strategies to attract the brightest and most enthusiastic scientists and clinicians (both medical and non-medical) into musculoskeletal research
  • To identify career paths for all relevant professional and scientific groups and advise on strategies to support individuals at the different stages
  • To work with others aiming to increase research and education capacity in the UK to maximise the benefit, for example, of the Walport and the HEFCE Clinical Senior Lecturer schemes

Policy for distribution

RECAP needs to ensure a balanced portfolio of support between its different constituency groups (clinicians, health professionals and scientists) and between the different levels from research entry to research leader. There is no fixed formula in regards to distribution. The decision in terms of distribution between strategies will depend on several outside influences including NHS and University policy on issues such as training, contracts and priorities, role of other funders and national decisions on pay and terms of employment. It is part of RECAP’s remit to keep a watching brief and react to these and other external influences and advise on what needs to be done to redress any deficiencies caused that could impact on arc goals
